Volunteer firefighter Neville Smith, 66, suffered severe burns on Friday while fighting a fire in the city of Tenterfield, New South Wales, said rural fire commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons.

Smith used to be flown to a scientific institution in the capital of Queensland, Brisbane, where his condition was listed on Saturday as serious but stable.

Officials said 110 forest fires had occurred in all neighboring states of Queensland and Recent South Wales since Friday, easier days after the end of the low-risk winter season in the south. At least 21 properties have been lost.

This year has been strangely hot and dry for astronomical parts of Australia, leaving much of the grass and forests in the country's populous southeast dry and extremely flammable as temperatures begin to rise after winter. The Southern Hemisphere's peak summer forest fire season is expected to be worse than average in much of the country.

"The fires in September and the severity of those fires reveal to us the horrible season of fires that we will be personal in the coming months," instructed journalist Gladys Berejiklian, a recent South Wales prime minister. Forest fires in Australia are identified as wildfires and pose an annual summer risk in much of the county.

The worst fires in contemporary decades have killed 173 of us and destroyed over 2,000 properties in Victoria, exclaiming towards the end of summer 2009.
